How To Enter DFU Mode On iPhone
DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is a powerful tool that allows you to interact with the firmware on your iPhone. It’s often used to troubleshoot and restore devices when they’re unresponsive, stuck in a boot loop, or need a clean installation of iOS.
For iPhone 7/8:
- Connect your iPhone to your computer using a USB cable.
- Make sure iTunes is open on your computer (For Macs running macOS Catalina and later, use Finder).
- Press and hold the power button (located on the right side) and the Volume Down button (located on the left side) simultaneously.
- After 8 seconds, release the power button while continuing to hold the Volume Down button. If the Apple logo appears, you’ve held down the power button for too long.
- If the screen stays black, you have successfully entered DFU mode. iTunes (or Finder) will detect your device in recovery mode. You can now proceed to restore or update your iPhone.
For iPhone X and later (including iPhone 14):
- Connect your iPhone to your computer using a USB cable.
- Make sure Finder is open on your computer (For PCs or Macs with macOS Catalina and later).
- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
- Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the power button until the screen turns black.
- Without releasing the power button, press and hold the Volume Down button for 5 seconds.
- After 5 seconds, release the power button while continuing to hold the Volume Down button. If the Apple logo appears, you’ve held down the power button for too long.
- If the screen stays black, your iPhone is in DFU mode. Finder will recognise your device in recovery mode, and you can proceed with the necessary actions
Exiting DFU mode is as simple as restarting your device. Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons (for iPhone 7/8) or the Side (or Power) button and Volume Down button (for iPhone X and later) until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
