Every year, we successfully repair hundreds of broken electronics that we receive. Broken tracks, shorted capacitors, and malfunctioning buck converter integrated circuits account for the majority of Apple MacBook problems. The backlight issue with MacBooks is a pretty prevalent problem.

A Success Story from Auckland

This is a current success story regarding an Australian consumer. She spent a few days in Auckland for an intensive course at Auckland University. Her MacBook Pro 2020 A1990 unfortunately died, and she wanted it fixed because this failure left all of her work unfinished. She came up to us at our Ponsonby Smashed It store, assuming it was a battery problem.

After closer examination, we found that the motherboard was only drawing 5V from any charging connector. By measuring the input voltage at each charging port—which should be 20V—this easy test determines whether the motherboard can interact with the charger. In this instance, the charging ports on the left side were drawing 100 mAmp of current at 5V, while the ports on the right side were drawing 450 mAmp. This indicated that none of the USB-C controllers were operating normally due to a malfunctioning right-side USB-C Controller IC.

We noticed that one of the USB-C integrated circuits had a 3V LDO shorted to the ground, which indicates a shorted IC, after doing continuity and diode mode tests surrounding it. Even after we changed that IC, the MacBook would not turn on. Next, we also changed the Master USB-C IC. Two integrated circuits (ICs) on each side—a Master controller and a Slave IC—control two charging ports. Here, we changed the Master and Slave ICs simultaneously. Following additional testing, the MacBook restarted and began to draw standard current at 20V for each port.
