In the UK, prices can be up to 21% more expensive than that of The United States, where as some countries in Europe you can pick one up for as little as $15 more than the American price. A lot of other countries it can be upto a few hundred dollars more, for example Italy. In other countries like Germany, France, Spain and Belgium. They sit on the same average price, but they still pay more than you would in the UK. It all comes down to a number of reasons. The main reasons being Sales Tax, GST, VAT, Costs of shipping, Customs Tax and supply/demand of the area you are living in.
For instance, buying an iPhone in New Zealand, we have a high demand for iPhones yet we only have a small population compared to say, Australia. Therefore shipping items in bulk by retailers come at a higher price. We also have a GST rate of 15%, but on a plus side most of our handsets are unlocked for Global use. But that also hikes up the price.
If you were living in the UK and were ordering an iPhone from America, the price may look appealing, but comes with a catch or hidden costs. You are usually seeing the price before Sales Tax, with that added it may still look appealing. Then add on Customs Tax plus any unlocking fees you may need to pay for to unlock the phone, you may only end up saving around 20 Pounds. Is it really worth it? The cheapest place to buy an iPhone is Hong Kong, but only by a few dollars.
So people in Hong Kong or The United States will always have it cheaper, and unless the costs in each country of Tax or Demand increases or decreases it will most likely always be that way. So if you are on holiday in a country that sells a cheaper unlocked iPhone. Then purchase one. You may not find it cheaper for a few years. But if you are looking at buying one to be shipped over to you. The best bet would be to hold off or just tough it out and buy one from your local retailer, where you know 100% It will work without fault.
